Please welcome… Sultan – the South American Coati. The ecological police of Iquitos, Peru had given us this young male on Saturday, 11th March 2023. The new addition to Pilpintuwasi wildlife rescue and isn’t he just the cutest? (ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

Unfortunately, they are becoming an increasingly popular pet due to the Coati’s appearance (unusual and rather beautiful). The rise of pet trends is disastrous for biodiversity as it continues to fuel the illegal pet trade. Sultan, like many of our other Coatis, was surrendered by his “owner” after becoming too boisterous and wild .. after all he is a wild animal! He is roughly 3 months old, so still, a baby who would be dependable on learning skills from his mother and their band. A group of female Coatis is called a ‘Band’ – males live in solitary.

The Coati is a member of the raccoon family and has a distribution across tropical and subtropical South America ranging from Colombia and The Guianas south to Uruguay and northern Argentina. They typically live in forests (including evergreen rainforests, cloud forests, deciduous rainforests, and dry scrub forests) but are incredible at adapting to new environments and have been increasingly popular faces to be seen in areas of human development as they are successful scavengers.

Coatis feed by utilizing their long noses by poking them under rocks and into crevices in search of a snack. They also use their long claws to dig holes or tear apart rotting logs. This species is an omnivore, the diet consists of primarily fruits and invertebrates. They provide an ecological niche due to their diet, these animals affect insect populations in their range and act as seed dispersers of the fruit they consume.

The main threats to South American coatis include hunting for meat and habitat loss through deforestation. The IUCN Red List and other sources do not provide the South American coati total population size. Currently, this species is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List but its numbers today are decreasing. We must protect our forests to help not only the Coati but the immense rates of biodiversity within.

Fun fact: Coati Dung Coffee produced in Peru is the most expensive coffee in the world. The excreta of the Coati is used to create this unique coffee.

Sultan – when he arrived. He will be slowly introduced into our current band of Coatis.. he needs to grow a little more first – we will keep you all updated on his progress. We are happy to announce so far he seems like a healthy and happy individual.

She was found on our land, far from the installations, when one of the workers was looking for termites for Silvia, our termite-eaters.

She was weighing only 400g and had infected injuries because of shrapnel (fortunately it didn’t stay under her skin). Also, we heard that people were feeding her with rice and fish. Needless to say, that has nothing to do with her right diet… A two-fingered sloth can eat leaves (shimbillo etc…), some fruits (papaya, mango, etc…), and roots (manioc, carrots, etc…). However, a baby sloth only drinks milk, and the only healthy substitute is goat’s milk. If you have visited Iquitos, you probably noticed that it’s hard to find specialty products like goat’s milk. For this reason, we needed to order it from Lima where it’s actually imported from the United States.

Sloths are fragile animals. Too much stress can be fatal for them. Finding the right treatment is difficult because of the side effects it has on their slow metabolism and four stomachs. For example, if it gets diarrhea, it would take one week to see the improvement by that time it might be too late.

Usually, a baby sloth almost never survives if it’s under 1kg, but our little Chispa is a survivor and she’s now doing really well! After a few months of recovering she’s now a young and healthy two-fingered sloth who is beginning to move on her own and has one big appetite!

Hello, dear friends of Pilpintuwasi!

Finally, we have an update to give you an insight into what has been going on in our Rescue Centre during the last few weeks. Joining the already existing resident animals we have recently welcomed some new and very interesting individuals.

One of our latest arrivals is Miti, a small wild cat native to Central and South America which is called Jaguarundi. Miti came to us from Tarapoto where she was owned by a family who fed her well but kept her under terrible living conditions in a 1m square cage for approximately seven years. That’s why she is still a little bit afraid of the size of her new enclosure here in Pilpintuwasi. Slowly Miti has started walking around to explore her environment. She really enjoys fishing in the little pool which was built for her.

Our Titimonkey ”Moritz” and our Owl Monkey “Musmu” are now happily living together in the same enclosure. Moritz was confiscated by the ecological police who found him on a tree in Iquitos with a string around his waist. As the Titi monkey is diurnal, whereas the Owl Monkey is nocturnal, they will have to find a solution regarding their daily schedule J

A few days ago three little caimans arrived. At the moment they are not really intimidating but caimans can reach a length of 3 meters. To help them grow to their full size we are busy regularly supplying them with small fish, their favorite meal.

Unfortunately, Pepe, one of our Blue and Yellow Macaws was injured when he made the bad decision to take a rest on an Ocelot enclosure and was scratched by Harry on his foot. Currently, we care for Pepe in the volunteers´ hut by hand-feeding him, giving him a much-loved scratch on the head, and taking him for trips into the sunshine. When he has recovered he can once again enjoy his days outside with his companions.

Most recently, we were able to release a Boa Constrictor that was found in the Iquitos football stadium and then was brought to us by the ecological police. With water levels rising, more and more snakes are appearing throughout the city as they try to escape from the high water. After the veterinarian examined it for any parasites or injuries we released the Boa by taking a fifteen-minute walk from Pilpintuwasi into the jungle.

Wherever you go you will always be accompanied by at least one of our curious and often quite mischievous Red Uakari girls roaming around freely. They are incredibly eager to help us fulfill our daily tasks such as fishing, cricket hunting, or cleaning and make sure we do it correctly. Some of the Red Uakaris are also very keen on playing with Kai, our Woolly Monkey baby who was hand raised and is about six months now. Little by little he starts to explore the exciting environment of Pilpintuwasi and from day to day he gets more self-confident.

As you can imagine every day brings a new surprise so it is always worth visiting Pilpintuwasi!!!
