I am very sad to have to announce that Pedro Bello, our beloved jaguar, has passed away . It’ s hard to express in a few words what he meant to me and Pilpintuwasi.
In december 2000, a 9 months old jaguar cub was left at the grounds of what now stands as Pilpintuwasi. Due to circumstances he could never be released into the wild, but l think he was quite happy during the 24 years he spent with us.
He was the heart of Pilpintuwasi, a catalyst for change, the beginning of our fight to help wild animals, victims of illegal trade.
We gave him all our love and the admiration and respect he deserved. I want to thank Roxie especially, who sponsored “his majesty” to live the best life possible in captive care.

I am not one to write personally onto our social media but I know Pedro was special not only to me but to many of us. His gaze was strong to the end, wise and powerful.

Pedro – his Highness- the JAGUAR.

ESPANOL ABAJO

Pedro – his majesty, a jaguar (Panthera Onca) and the reason for Pilpintuwasi becoming a home to rescue animals from the illegal wildlife trade. We now serve as a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting animals affected by the illegal wildlife trade.

That is right, Pedro was in fact the first animal rescue to come to the centre, which opened first as just a mariposariom – a place dedicated to the study of butterflies. It now serves as a refuge for many victims of the wildlife trade, including his highness- who is over 20 years old and could possibly be the oldest jaguar alive on earth!! Although we deeply wish he could return to the wild- we could never gain permits to rehabilitate him as his habituation to human activity would put him at risk of being hunted easily.

We try to ensure Pedro lives his best life possible in our captive care. It is not ideal and no cage will ever suffice for a jaguar. A male jaguar in the wild has a home range between 19 to 53 square miles. Wild cats should never be pets. Trending social media posts of people and exotic pets are increasing the demand as it influences others to want a new pet, thus furthering wildlife trafficking. Please, make a difference, and don’t interact with these posts – help educate others that these animals belong in the wild!

Pedro is given enrichment to help stimulate him – this includes scent posts, feathers, a simple card box (which all cats love!), frozen meat, or a tire swing! He is also supported by his wonderful Godmother “Roxie”, who has helped Pilpintuwasi care for Pedro, aiding us in his huge meat intake a day with regular donations- we are extremely grateful for her generosity and kindness. So is Pedro, who eats a staggering 4 kg of meat per day- due to his age we ensure he gets the best cuts and crushed bones. In the wild, broken canines for a jaguar would mean certain death as they’re invaluable for the specific hunting method jaguars use. death,

Jaguars have a more powerful bite than any other big cat. Their teeth are strong enough to bite through the thick hides of crocodilians and the hard shells of turtles. They need powerful teeth and jaws to take down prey three to four times their own weight – usually killing it with a bite to the back of the skull rather than biting the neck or throat like other big cats. Jaguars stalk and ambush their ground-dwelling prey at night, instead of chasing prey like cheetahs and lions do. One of the jaguar’s most successful hunting techniques is to climb into a tree and wait for prey to pass below.

Unfortunately, the jaguar population in the wild is rapidly decreasing! The jaguar once roamed from Argentina in South America all the way up to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Today, jaguars have been almost completely eliminated from the United States and are endangered throughout their range. Although they are protected in all their home territories, they face tremendous threats from illegal hunting (mainly for bones and teeth to be used as cultural medicine) and changes in land use for agricultural activities. We need to begin to value our forests, globally, which we all depend on. We need to protect areas of high biodiversity, through protection enforcement and putting pressure on governments to support indigenous communities and protect land from agricultural takeovers.

Did you know? Jaguars can be “melanistic”, where they appear almost black. Melanistic jaguars (and leopards) are known as “black panthers”.

ESPANOL

Butterfly house (Mariposario)

(Español abajo) Pilpintuwasi is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting animals affected by the illegal wildlife trade which today is one of the biggest businesses in the world. At Pilpintuwasi, we currently have about 20 species of animals, such as jaguars, ocelots, tapir, parrots, a toucan, and many different species of monkeys and butterflies. Before opening our doors to animals in need of refuge from the illegal wildlife trade we were solely are mariposario – a home for butterflies.

Pilpintu(wasi) is a Quechua word meaning butterfly (home). Gudrun Sperrer was founded in 1995 discovering host plants for butterflies. In 2002, she started a butterfly farm with the idea of conserving some of the thousands of Amazonian species. It is vital we persevere with these fluttering artworks as they are highly sensitive indicators of the rainforest environment’s health, in addition to playing crucial roles in pollinating plants – flowers & food.

They are more than just beauty for our eye, they are more than a pinned collection in someone’s house or to be turned into earrings – often products seen for sale here in Peru and globally on the market. Whole species disappear from the wild as millions of animals are illegally exported around the world in a business with profit margins that rival the drugs trade.

Some experts put the total number of butterfly species in Peru at an astonishing 3700, representing some 20% of the world’s known butterfly species. More species of butterfly have been reported in Peru than in the whole of sub-equatorial Africa. In South America, only Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil come close to rivaling Peru’s extraordinary butterfly population. Incredibly, many scientists believe that butterfly species in Peru are under-recorded and that there may be as many as 4200 species in the nation’s biologically diverse natural areas.

The enormous variety of Peru’s butterfly population is due to the uniquely broad range of ecosystems found across the nation’s territory. However, these numbers are dramatically decreasing due to varying factors : trading (mostly dead butterflies) for collection purposes, touristic gifts (such as earrings and bracelets), habitat loss, and climate change. Butterflies worldwide are endangered due to the clear-cutting of forests and above all because of people’s ignorance about the life cycles of the plants they live on. People don’t know that each butterfly species lays its eggs on a specific type of plant. When we eliminate a plant, we also eliminate the possibility of an entire species reproducing.

The Blue Morpho ( Morpho peleides Kollar )

The iconic Blue Morphos are severely threatened, this is mainly by the deforestation of tropical forests and habitat fragmentation. Humans provide a direct threat to this spectacular creature because their beauty attracts artists and collectors from all over the globe who wish to capture and display them. Another propitiative butterfly species in Peru is the Giant Forest Owl Butterfly which is critically endangered – this is due to deforestation and unsuitable harvesting, several species of owl butterflies are considered endangered or extinct in the wild now. There are countless others facing the same fate and due to a lack of research and recording it is unknown exactly how many species are now lost or close to extinction in the wild.

The Giant Forest Owl Butterfly (Caligo eurilochus)

Pilpintuwasi has permits to breed several species that are then released back into the wild. We also help educate tourists on not supporting the trade of butterflies used in tourist gift attractions and teach school groups and young members of the communities about the butterfly life cycle. A lot of people close to the center and across the Amazonas are unaware that the caterpillar is at the stage of becoming a butterfly, and often fear them to due the primitive looks they have eg hairs of spines – that maybe they can be poisonous or harmful. Though it is presumed 1 out of 20 butterflies have the ability to cause mild irritations or affect the human skin. We hope to educate people on their hidden secrets and that they are not dangerous as perceived, to not kill them but admire them instead.

A convincing disguise transforms the hawk moth caterpillar into a small snake to ward off potential predators. When facing a potential threat, the hawk moth caterpillar takes the form of a pit viper. Many caterpillars have an appearance to deter other animals from eating them, through transformations, hairs, coloring, or scents.

So through this post, it is hope that you see the importance of the work our Mariposarion does – that we serve as more than just a rescue center, and the work we do hopes to educate and re-wild. Many other butterfly farms are not sustainable in their practices, it is always okay to challenge people on what they do when it comes to wildlife – to research and understand the effects of purchasing butterflies ALIVE OR DEAD. To know where butterfly houses source their animals and if it helps the local environment.

Wishing all who read this well, love and light from Pilpintuwasi! <3

A goodbye & thank you to a great wildlife warrior. Alexis Diaz Limaco – Gracias for todo!

On the 27th April 2023, the world lost a champion for wildlife activism, animal welfare, and rights. Alexis Diaz Limaco was Animal Defenders International Latin American General Manager. He was our correspondent to the animals we care for at Pilpintuwasi that were Rescued through ADI and brought to us for refuge.

Alexis worked for over 20 years with ADI, first as part of the undercover team where his undercover work was vital in helping to change laws and attitudes towards animal welfare across Latin America.

Alexis was not just a champion for animals but first, as a human rights activist, he then played a significant role in getting circus bans for use of wild animals in Europe and Latin America. He is a reminder to us all, we all can make a huge difference – we all influence the environment around us and can change the world for a positive future for all.

We are eternally grateful for you Alexis, thank you for every soul you saved.

If you want to read more about this astonishing man, please click the link below. You can read the testimony from ADI, and learn about his incredible work and the challenges he faced.

Spider-monkeys, one of the largest primates in the Americas and a frequent sight seen across growing “exotic pet trends” and entertainment. These highly intelligent and social creatures are often found in troops of up to 30 individuals, however, there has been groups recorded with having over 100 members in the wild.

The spider monkey has very long, thin arms with no opposable thumb – instead a hooklike hand that allows them to swing through the trees. The long limbs, with the occurrence of walking on two legs and common behaviour of hugging one another. Embracing each other and wrapping themselves around others makes them seem “cute” and “cuddly” – these desired traits are idolised for those wanting exotic pets. Unfortunately, spider monkeys are under threat from hunting and trapping – these wild animals are not pets. nor will they make good pets, they need stimulation – large groups and social connections- a huge territory and canopy to browse for fruits. They are not here for our entertainment and suffer in captivity.

During the days, these monkeys search for fruit which is the main part of their diet. While they also observed eating sees, flowers, barks, leaves, and small insects during the dry season when the fruit is not always available. These omnivores are incredibly intelligent, recognizing seasonal differences in the forests that they call home – having robust memories of where to find fruits and paths through the canopy.

The name Spider-monkey comes from the similarities they share with the arachnids when they drop from trees, upside and hang from their tails with arms and legs dangling – resembling a sort of spider shape. Their genus name is Atelese – the origin meaning “imperfect” which refers to the fact they do not have opposable thumbs.

There are seven species of spider monkeys, which are wild populations are largely concentrated in Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru. The individuals that ate refuge at Pilpintuwasi are all victims of the illegal wildlife trade. Several of the spider monkeys were tied with short metal chains to the floor of a garage in Lima, immobile and used as entertainment as pets. The troop we have were rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) which works with varying animal welfare cases and conservation practices. They were brought to our center where they are now cared for by Nils, they have just one worker dedicated to their care – they have been traumatized and it is paramount we do not stress them further.

One spider-monkey in our care is easily distinguished from the others, we gave her the name Valeria as she bared the eyes of the ‘white walkers’ seen in the popular TV show ‘Game of Thrones’. Her eyes are a breathtaking pale blue, this is a very rare phenotype seen in primates, in fact only three species in the world display this trait – humans being one, spider monkeys, and one species of lemur. Valeria is a brown-spider monkey, one of the most endangered primates in the Neotropics, and has been listed six times on the ‘World’s 25 Most Endangered Primates” list. This unusual eye color can be seen in less than 13% of the wild spider monkey population found in Columbia, the blue-iris mutation, unfortunately, makes them more desirable to hunting – a rare mutation that could be a death sentence due to the human greed and desire to collect natures treasures.

Valeria, our female blue-eyed spider monkey.

Alberto, is a Jabiru stork also known locally in Peru as a Tuyuyo – now that’s fun to say! The species name comes from the Guarani language and means “swollen neck” as these birds are able to inflate their air sacs at will. These are one of the largest birds in the Americas standing 5ft tall and with a wingspan of over 8ft they are the largest flying bird in South America.

The expansion of the air sack communicates excitement/eagerness to other birds – an important expression for an almost silent bird. With no songs, Alberto relies on tapping his beak at different rhythms to get his point across – often a “feed me” plea. Two individuals will turn to one another, face to face, hold their necks upright, and quickly clack/rattle their beaks together. These are social birds, this is a crucial act of bonding that helps develop relationships between each other.

Alberto is a young juvenile male Tuyuyo and is a victim of unsuccessful hunting. When he arrived at Pilpintuwasi about a year and a half ago, he had been shot and still has shrapnel remains in his back to this day. We are very grateful that the remnants do not seem to inhibit his ability to move his wings thus far.

Alberto is recovering and growing up wonderfully. He is quite the happy bird and always clacks in excitement at the arrival of fish. However, as much as we try to give him the best life he can, none will ever be as good as returning to the wild. Alberto deserves to have a full life outside of a cage and in his natural habitat.

We already have the documents needed to legally release Alberto back into the wild. However in order to do so, he first needs to strengthen his flying muscles and learn how to fly. He is still young and is at the age right now where he would be practicing flying if he were in the wild, but unfortunately, his juvenile cage is not big enough for him to stretch out his wings and learn. In order to rewild Alberto, he needs a large aviary with enough space to learn how to fly and hunt his own food.

This aviary would immensely help not only with the rewilding of Alberto, but this space will continue to be used after Alberto’s release by other rescue birds that are recovering from their own respective injuries and learning how to fly. For example, one of our blue & gold macaws Pepe is recovering from numerous injuries, but once his flight feathers grow back he will also need a large space to strengthen his muscles and learn how to fly. This aviary is critical in the rewilding of numerous of our rescue birds.

Please donate at our gofundme to support the construction of a new bigger and better aviary for Alberto (and in the future others), so that one day he may be wild once more.

Alberto did not deserve the treatment that he received from such a young age and does not deserve to spend the rest of his life in a cage. This species has an average recorded lifespan of 30 years – he does not deserve a life sentence. He deserves to live in the wild. Please support him and join the #FreeAlberto movement today as we work to rewild and release him.

Donation Link: https://gofund.me/3e52b5c8?fbclid=PAAaan5ntT1nqQy_wnWqs2unyOcEfnQpwTew2xsWj6vxuDfiF1XfyjV2CY8O4

Please welcome… Sultan – the South American Coati. The ecological police of Iquitos, Peru had given us this young male on Saturday, 11th March 2023. The new addition to Pilpintuwasi wildlife rescue and isn’t he just the cutest? (ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

Unfortunately, they are becoming an increasingly popular pet due to the Coati’s appearance (unusual and rather beautiful). The rise of pet trends is disastrous for biodiversity as it continues to fuel the illegal pet trade. Sultan, like many of our other Coatis, was surrendered by his “owner” after becoming too boisterous and wild .. after all he is a wild animal! He is roughly 3 months old, so still, a baby who would be dependable on learning skills from his mother and their band. A group of female Coatis is called a ‘Band’ – males live in solitary.

The Coati is a member of the raccoon family and has a distribution across tropical and subtropical South America ranging from Colombia and The Guianas south to Uruguay and northern Argentina. They typically live in forests (including evergreen rainforests, cloud forests, deciduous rainforests, and dry scrub forests) but are incredible at adapting to new environments and have been increasingly popular faces to be seen in areas of human development as they are successful scavengers.

Coatis feed by utilizing their long noses by poking them under rocks and into crevices in search of a snack. They also use their long claws to dig holes or tear apart rotting logs. This species is an omnivore, the diet consists of primarily fruits and invertebrates. They provide an ecological niche due to their diet, these animals affect insect populations in their range and act as seed dispersers of the fruit they consume.

The main threats to South American coatis include hunting for meat and habitat loss through deforestation. The IUCN Red List and other sources do not provide the South American coati total population size. Currently, this species is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List but its numbers today are decreasing. We must protect our forests to help not only the Coati but the immense rates of biodiversity within.

Fun fact: Coati Dung Coffee produced in Peru is the most expensive coffee in the world. The excreta of the Coati is used to create this unique coffee.

Sultan – when he arrived. He will be slowly introduced into our current band of Coatis.. he needs to grow a little more first – we will keep you all updated on his progress. We are happy to announce so far he seems like a healthy and happy individual.

<speak>Florian, the Saki monkey, was confiscated by ecological police in Tarapoto. When he arrived at Pilpintuwasi, he was dehydrated and infected by parasites.
At Pilpintuwasi, Florian found companionship with a female Saki monkey called Zecke. They spent three years together and then, unfortunately, even with the great care we had given her she suddenly got sick. We ran tests and found out that her kidneys were not functioning due to an unhealthy diet before her arrival. Although she received medical treatment, it was too late and she passed away.
Bad nutrition is an issue we experience a lot with wild animals that were kept as pets. Another problem with medical care is that symptoms often show very late in non-domesticated animals. In the wild, that is a coping mechanism especially with monkeys not to show their weaknesses to their troop. Otherwise, they would often be left behind or slow down the troop and put them at risk of predators.
After Zecke’s death, we wanted to release him with other Saki monkeys.
In October this year, we finally got the permission to transfer him to Monkey Island where he can be with Saki monkeys in freedom. We accompanied him to the island. We set off for Iquitos where we met the owner of Monkey Island and boarded the boat together. The journey was a little bumpier than expected. Ten minutes into the ride, a big storm came up that eventually forced the boat to stop and evacuate everyone. Thankfully, Florian wasn’t too stressed and after thirty minutes, the storm calmed down and everyone arrived well at Monkey Island.
As it was getting dark, we walked Florian to his enclosure where he settled in for the night. After ten days of getting used to his surroundings, he was released. Florian is now free to roam around Monkey Island and will hopefully find a new Saki monkey companion.
It is sad to see Florian go, but it is always an amazing experience to give an animal back its freedom.</speak>

Josefa is an adult female coati who arrived on the first of July of this year from Lima city.
Josefa lived for years in a police station in Chorrillos district.
She survived by hunting rats and mice and also receiving the leftovers from the policemen.

The Wildlife organizations found out about her case and presented it to the ecological police.

They called Pilpintuwasi to find out if there was space for her. We agreed to take her because we have a group of coatis that we hoped would be the perfect family. Now she is back in the Amazon where she belongs.

After Josefa arrived, the process of adaption started. In the beginning, she lost a lot of weight and we even considered returning her to Lima. As she had been kept as a pet and fed strawberry yogurt, marmalade, and egg yolks, she had forgotten to behave like a coati and did not take to her new diet of worms, bananas, boiled chicken, mandarines, etc.
We decided to introduce her to one of our female adult coatis to see if she could teach Josefa how to behave like a coati, and it worked!
Eventually, she adapted to her new diet and is now starting to regain weight and even digs for worms and insects. This gave hope to everybody because we didn’t want to send her back.

Now Josefa is a healthy coati who searches for insects, fish and eats a healthy diet for coatis enjoying her time in the rainforest!

Chispa is a young two-fingered female sloth who has been with us for almost 5 months. She was found on our land, far from the installations, when one of the workers was looking for termites for Silvia, our termite-eaters.

She was weighing only 400g and had infected injuries because of shrapnel (fortunately it didn’t stay under her skin). Also, we heard that people were feeding her with rice and fish. Needless to say, that has nothing to do with her right diet… A two-fingered sloth can eat leaves (shimbillo etc…), some fruits (papaya, mango, etc…), and roots (manioc, carrots, etc…). However, a baby sloth only drinks milk, and the only healthy substitute is goat’s milk. If you have visited Iquitos, you probably noticed that it’s hard to find specialty products like goat’s milk. For this reason, we needed to order it from Lima where it’s actually imported from the United States.

Sloths are fragile animals. Too much stress can be fatal for them. Finding the right treatment is difficult because of the side effects it has on their slow metabolism and four stomachs. For example, if it gets diarrhea, it would take one week to see the improvement by that time it might be too late.

Usually, a baby sloth almost never survives if it’s under 1kg, but our little Chispa is a survivor and she’s now doing really well! After a few months of recovering she’s now a young and healthy two-fingered sloth who is beginning to move on her own and has one big appetite!
